Winter Fruit Crumble Pie
4 12 2012
I made this pie for Thanksgiving and everyone raved about it. Even my son, who does not like apple pie, thought it was delicious. I liked the combination of apples, pears, cranberries and an unusual fruit, figs. Use your favorite pie crust recipe and line a 10 inch deep dish pie pan. This would be a nice Christmas pie as well. Enjoy.

Sansai Gohan (Mountain Vegetable Rice)
21 08 2012
This is one of my favorite Japanese rice dishes. The mountain vegetables come in a pack in the refrigerated section of a Japanese grocery store. They are a mixture of all sorts of Japanese mountain vegetables like fiddlehead ferns and butterbur. I like them in rice and with noodles especially soba. I will give measurements in metric because that is how I learned in Japan.

Broiled Snapper with a Teriyaki-Butter Sauce

I made this as part of a Japanese meal the other night. It was delicious. If you cannot find snapper, substitute salmon, halibut, black cod, grouper, pike or char.

Miso Soup with Tofu and Wakame
13 08 2012
A friend of mine asked me to put a basic miso soup recipe on my website. This can be used as a template for any type of miso soup. Basically you always want to start with dash, which is the Japanese fish stock. It is normally made with shaved bonito flakes but now you can make it with instant dashi powder or dashi packs that look like teabags. Basically you just make the dashi according to the package and then proceed from there. You can vary the type of miso. I often us a mix of red and white miso. White miso is sweeter and milder than the red. You can other vegetables or even seafood or chicken into miso soup. Be creative.

Acai Bowls
5 07 2012
I was in Hawaii about a month ago and we found the best breakfast ever. From a little shack by the side of the water, they were selling these amazing acai bowl concoctions. Acai is a super fruit from the Brazilian rainforest. You can find it pureed and frozen at gourmet stores like Whole Foods. Basically you blend the frozen puree with other fruit and pour it over some granola and fruit for a super yummy healthy breakfast or even a mid-day treat. Feel free to vary the fruit and the liquid that you use in the blender.

I made this recently for a large group of people and they truly loved it. The best part was the cauliflower. My guests were simply expecting Mac N Cheese so the cauliflower took them by surprise. This is gourmet deluxe cheesy pasta.

Green Olive Hummus
12 11 2011
My good friend brought some of this over to share at a party. Oh my gosh! It was so delicious and even my kids, who do not like hummus, loved it. I think they what makes it so yummy was the wonderful green olive flavor and the subtle cumin and spice. The lack of tahini makes it lighter and less cloying. This is super simple so enjoy.

Candied Walnuts
27 09 2011
These walnuts are perfect on a salad with beets or goat cheese. I usually make a big batch and then freeze some so I have them on hand when I want to dress up any salad. It is important to boil the walnuts first to remove any bitterness.
